THE COMPARISONS AND CONTRAST OF FASTENERS

Fastener is a hardware device that mechanically joins or affixes two or more objects together and can also be used to close a container such as bag and box. Nowadays, the most famous fasteners are zipper and button.

From its early history, buttons and buttons-like objects used as ornaments or seals rather than fasteners have been discovered in the Indus Valley Civilization. In fact, it was originally used more as an ornament than as a fastening. Meanwhile, an early device superficially similar to the zipper, an “Automatic, Continuous Clothing Closure” was patented in the United States by Elias Howe in 1851. Forty years later, Mr. Whitcomb Judson marketed a ‘Clasp Locker’ device. Together with Colonel Lewis Walker, he launched the Universal Fastener Company. Finally, in 1913, Gideon Sunback had designed the modern zipper.

The next difference is on advantage. By using clothes that have button, if you are in hurry you can button the middle button quickly and stay relatively warm. Plus, if you are getting warm, you can unbutton the bottom button and keep your chest protected. For zipper, we can increase or decrease the size of an opening. Most backpacks have zippers on them, so the contents of the backpacks will not spill out and make you stop for a time and pick it up.

Button is easily takes out if the thread is not properly sewn to attach the button. In contrast, for zipper, problems often lie with the slider. When it becomes worn it does not properly align and the alternating teeth. If a zipper fails, it can either get stuck or partially break off.
To conclude, both zipper and button are the examples of devise that give an ease to our life. There is some research had been conducted and it is found that stuffs using zipper as its fasteners are more expensive rather than for those that using button.
